         Lesotho

Lesotho is treated as a single touring region. It is home of the Basotho People. Water is in abundance, this resource has created a mutual benefit for South Africa and Lesotho through the completion of major projects.

THINGS TO DO AND SEE

Angling The mountain streams of the highlands have some of the best trout fish in Africa

Curious The Basotho People are talented potters and weavers.

Riding Destination Companies organise horses, guides and camps.

Sight Seeing The all-weather partly tarred mountain road across the central highlands is spectacular, but demands careful driving.

Skiing There are ski runs in the Butha- Buthe district, with lifts and cabins at the oxbow lodge.

Walking Through the bridle paths of the highlands that were made for pack animals and horses.

PLACES OF INTEREST

Maseru, The Capital is the largest town and the economic Hub of Lesotho. It is a third world city with much to offer. They cater for all types and all religions when it comes to food, French, Italian, Chinese and even Muslim guests can really feel at home. Fresh fish is one of many favourites and you have a choice of drinks from beer, wine and spirits. Street stalls in Kingsway Road have African food like grilled meat. You will find African arts and crafts, ethnic jewellery wool and mohair rugs and tapestries.

Kings Palace Is an interesting place you can visit. You can book Day Excursions to this attractive building and the Prime Minister’s residence. Unfortunately  photographs are not to be taken.

Shepherd’s Craft Is north of Maseru, you will find Teyateyaneng, a place renowned for its arts and crafts especially the famous mohair and woollen rugs and tapestries. Nearby is St. Agnes Mission, which manufactures some of the best tapestries.

Mountain Pony Trekking through the beautiful land of Lesotho with majestic mountain ranges for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. Pony trekking is one of the favourites ways of seeing the countryside. The Basotho Pony Project has stables at the top of the Molimo Nthuse Pass which offers pony treks.There are many lodges which give you a choice of riding for a few hours or several days.

4x4 Country  The Sani Top, on top of the Sani Pass accommodates those who book in and hike the highest peak in Southern Africa, Thabana-Ntelenyana which is an imposing 3482 metres. You can take the easy way out and see the Top travelling in a 4x4 or a mountain bike.

National Park  Sehlabathebe National Park is Lesotho’s only national park and home to raptors and rare Maloti minnow. The southern Motlejoenj Caves near Mohale’s Hoek, the petrified forest on Thaba Ts’oeu mountain, dinosaur footprints at Moyeni and Bird Watching make this Park a "must view " attraction. You may see many of the recorded  279 different birds.

MAJOR CITIES

The capital and largest town, Maseru, has a population of approximately 170 000.

Accommodation facilities offered are varied they include, hotels, mountain lodges, chalets, camping sites and village huts in smaller towns. Most of the lodges and chalets are self-catering.
